I believe developing your personal style starts with more sustainable shopping habits.

When I was in my 20s, I was preoccupied with finding my personal style. I read books on the subject, assisted editors and stylists for Vogue Paris, Vogue China, and Glamour South Africa, and learned how to find expensive-looking clothing for cheap. Despite my efforts, my style felt blah, generic. I was trying to dress like other people, and it showed.

After working at Rent the Runway, I started learning about the sustainable fashion movement through Remake, a nonprofit that advocates for worker rights and climate justice in the fashion industry. I had no idea people threw away clothes, or that fashion brands paid garment workers so little. This knowledge bothered me. I could no longer keep buying cheaply-made clothes at the expense of people who made them.

Inspired by Remake, I committed to buying no new clothes for a year. Instead I’d rent, shop my closet, or buy secondhand, unsubscribing from fashion brands’ marketing. Interestingly, I felt relieved, and during that year I started dressing better than I’d ever dressed before. I learned how to get creative with my clothes, style them ways other people didn’t. Through wearing my values, I “found” that elusive style I’d tried to cultivate.

Two years later, I launched R. Davies Styling to share what I’d learned. I now buy the occasional new thing, but through a much more refined lens. The fashion industry has made us believe that we need to buy more stuff to dress well; my goal is to show you how to feel confident in the clothes that you have and to shop more discerningly. It’s a win for your style, peace-of-mind, and wallet, and the people who make our clothes and planet.

Now that’s stylish.

Xx, Robyn
